Ernest Gagnon publie « En roulant ma boule » en 1880 et le rattache à une famille plus ancienne, connue en France sous le nom du Canard blanc. D'autres collectes canadiennes montrent à quel point le refrain a circulé, au point de devenir presque autonome dans le répertoire des voyageurs.
La chanson a quelque chose de souple: on la reconnaît vite, mais elle accepte volontiers les variantes et les refrains rapportés d'ailleurs. C'est souvent le signe qu'un air a vraiment vécu.
Ernest Gagnon printed "En roulant ma boule" in 1880 and linked it to an older family of songs known in France as Le Canard blanc. Other Canadian collections show just how widely the refrain moved, to the point that it almost became a song in its own right within voyageur repertoire.
There is a looseness to it. You recognize it fast, but it also welcomes variants and borrowed refrains. That is usually a good sign that a tune has actually lived.
